Here is a lil preview of the Birthday Interview Questions for Kids by Age
Your camera roll has 4,000 photos of your kid. Zero of them explain why broccoli is "spicy."
That's what a birthday interview is for.
What is a birthday interview? A birthday interview is a short set of questions you ask your child once a year, on or around their birthday, and write down their answers. Asking similar questions every year creates a record of how your child's personality, interests, and way of thinking change from toddler to teenager. It takes about 10 minutes, and by 18 it becomes one of the most meaningful keepsakes you can give them.

The questions below come straight from the Birthday Interview section of the Heart Journals keepsake journal, grouped by age. Pick a few, ask them tonight, and write down exactly what they say.
Birthday Interview Questions for Ages 4–6 (Engage)
At this age, you're not looking for the "right" answer. You're looking for their wild, wonderful little thoughts. Keep it light — play always wins.
- What makes you feel super brave?
- Who in our family makes you laugh the most, and why?
- What's the best thing about being your age?
- If you could make one rule for the world, what would it be?
Birthday Interview Questions for Ages 7–9 (Wonder)
Kids this age start asking bigger questions about the world and themselves. Capture what excites them and what they're dreaming about.
- If you could talk to bugs, what would you ask them?
- What's one thing I do that makes you feel loved?
- What's something you worked really hard at this year?
- If you had to eat the same meal for the rest of your life, what would you pick?
Birthday Interview Questions for Ages 10–13 (Discover)
As kids get more independent, the conversations get deeper. This is the stage of self-discovery.
- What's something I could do to support you better?
- Who's someone you really admire, and why?
- What makes you feel strong inside?
- What kind of person do you want to be as you grow older?
How to Do a Birthday Interview (Without Making It Weird)
- Keep it short. Five to ten minutes and a handful of questions is plenty.
- Record the conversation. Use your phone's voice memo so you can stay present, then write down the best parts later.
- Repeat a few questions every year. Asking the same question at 5, 9, and 13 is where the magic is ...you get to watch the answer grow up.
- Don't force it. With older kids, try asking while driving, cooking, or doing something side by side. Not in the mood? Try again tomorrow.
- Keep every year in one place. Loose notes get lost. One journal holds the whole story.
It's Not Too Late to Start
You don't need to have started at birth. Whether your kid is 4 or 14, this year's answers are the first page of the story. Ask one question tonight. Write it down. Ask again next birthday. By the time they're grown, you'll have something no photo can give them: who they were, in their own words, year after year.

Birthday Interview FAQ
What is a birthday interview? A birthday interview is a yearly tradition where a parent asks their child a set of questions around their birthday and records the answers. Over time, it shows how a child's personality, interests, and values change as they grow.
What age should you start a birthday interview? You can start at any age. For babies and toddlers (ages 0–3), parents write their own reflections: milestones, favorite things, and funny moments. From about age 4, kids can answer simple questions themselves.
How many birthday interview questions should I ask? Four to ten questions is enough. The goal is a short, fun conversation, not a quiz. Many families ask a few of the same questions every year plus a few age-specific ones.
Should I ask the same birthday questions every year? Repeating some questions every year is what makes a birthday interview meaningful, because you can compare answers across ages. Mix in new, age-appropriate questions as your child grows.
What if my kid won't answer the questions? Keep it casual and low-pressure. Older kids and teens often open up more while driving, cooking, or doing an activity together. If they're not in the mood, try again later.
Where should I keep my child's birthday interview answers? Keep every year in one dedicated place, like a keepsake journal, so the answers stay together and can be given to your child when they're grown. Heart Journals includes Birthday Interview prompts for every age from 0 to 16+.
